Peace Begins When We Trust God

Scripture

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
— Isaiah 26:3

Reflection

Sometimes the greatest distance between us and peace is not what is happening around us.

It is what is happening within us.

Our bodies may be sitting quietly while our minds are running from one concern to another.

We replay a conversation and wonder whether we said the wrong thing.

We think about someone we love and imagine everything that could go wrong.

We look at a financial concern, a family situation, a decision that needs to be made, or an unanswered prayer—and before long, we are mentally living through circumstances that haven't even happened.

We tell ourselves that if we can just think about the problem long enough, perhaps we can find the answer that will finally allow us to rest.

But worry rarely knows when its work is finished.

One question leads to another.

One possibility creates three more.

And the peace we promised ourselves we would feel once everything was settled keeps moving farther away.

Perhaps that is because God never intended peace to depend upon everything being settled.

Isaiah gives us a different picture.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Notice where the peace comes from.

Not from knowing what will happen.

Not from having every problem resolved.

Not from finally gaining control over everything that concerns us.

Peace grows from knowing where to place our trust.

That doesn't mean the situation suddenly becomes easy.

Trust does not require us to pretend that something isn't painful, uncertain, or important.

It simply means we stop asking ourselves to carry what belongs in God's hands.

There are things you can do.

You can pray.

You can seek wisdom.

You can make the phone call.

You can apologize.

You can set the boundary.

You can prepare.

You can take the next responsible step.

But eventually, every situation reaches a place where your part ends.

And that is often where worry tries to begin.

What if this happens?

What if they don't respond?

What if I made the wrong decision?

What if things don't work out the way I hoped?

Those questions can keep us standing mentally at a door God never asked us to open.

Trust says:

I have done what is mine to do. Now I will allow God to be God.

That can be one of the hardest forms of surrender.

We sometimes think surrender means giving up.

But biblical surrender is not hopelessness.

It is recognizing that the safest place for what we cannot control is not inside our worried minds.

It is in the hands of the One who can see what we cannot.

God sees beyond today's uncertainty.

He knows the conversation you haven't had yet.

He knows the answer you are waiting to receive.

He knows which doors will open and which ones need to remain closed.

He knows what you need before you know how to ask for it.

And He knows how to guide you if circumstances change.

You do not have to mentally rehearse every possible future in order to be prepared for the one that actually arrives.

There will be grace for that moment when it comes.

There will be wisdom for that decision when it needs to be made.

There will be strength for that day when you reach it.

You only need today's grace for today.

So when your thoughts begin running ahead again, gently bring them home.

Back to this moment.

Back to this breath.

Back to what you know.

God is here.

God is faithful.

God sees what you cannot see.

And whatever tomorrow contains, you will not arrive there without Him.

Perhaps peace begins there.

Not when you finally know everything will work out exactly as you planned.

But when you realize that even if you don't know how it will work out, you know Who will be with you while it does.

A Quiet Thought

You do not have to solve tomorrow in order to rest tonight.

Peace begins when you release what you cannot control to the God who can be trusted with it.

Prayer

Father, You know how easily my thoughts can run ahead of me. You know the questions I keep revisiting and the circumstances I wish I could control. Help me recognize what is mine to do and give me the courage to do it faithfully. Then teach me to release the rest into Your hands. When worry pulls my mind toward tomorrow, bring me gently back to Your presence today. Quiet what I cannot quiet on my own, steady my thoughts, and help me trust that whatever comes, You will meet me there. Amen.

Carry This With You

You do not need tomorrow's answers today.
You need today's trust for today's journey.

Continue Your Journey

If this reflection met you where you are today, there is more encouragement waiting for you.
